Description

Jones-Emberson 1 aka PK164+31.1, is best known as, "The Headphone Nebula".  This is a planetary nebula similar to the Ring or Dumbbell Nebula formed by the dying echoes of a star similar in mass to our sun.

JE-1 is roughly 1,600 light years from earth.  It is one of the few appreciably-sized nebulae that are well-placed for imaging in the northern spring skies.

JE1 is rather hard to find visually owing to its low surface brightness.  Both the nebula and the 17th-magnitude central star are challenging objects for visual observers.  Heck, just star hopping to it is a bit of challenge given its location way off the beaten path in Lynx.

Fortunately, imagers like myself have use to filters like the L-Enhance that can pass the H-alpha and O-III emissions and filter out the rest.

This was shot from a Bortle 6 sky, with the 90% waning gibbous moon up half the time, but...hey, I live in NE Ohio.  I grab the clear nights when I can get them.
